Top Font Foundries for Free Downloadable Fonts: Discover the Best Typefoundries!
So, fonts. Hard not to love them, right? I might even say it’s hard not to want a huge, beautiful collection of them, even if it’s just to check them every now and then. Besides, having a nice, robust font catalogue before getting to work can also lead to the success of a project. Yet, acquiring them an be quite costly (specially if you are starting or you don’t really know how to chose them beforehand).
There are some tools you’ve probably heard of. On one side, there is the unlimited DaFont catalogue (which can be great but a bit overwhelming and tricky if you don’t have a keen eye). On the other, Google Fonts catalogue is great (only showing really nice quality fonts) but with most of their options focused on web-text usage (although they do have the awesome feature which allows you to use them in two easy steps on any website). But, let’s be honest, there is much more than that going on in the deep, wide font-ocean we live in, isn’t there?
Here are some (hopefully useful) links for you to check out if you are looking for great free fonts to use on your designs.
Omnibus Type
This is a small Argentinean foundry spezialied in text font (but with some nice display-ish fonts around, too). They have some really interesting experiments (such as a text font inspired in gothic calligraphy) and all their fonts present several variables. Although some of them can be found in Google fonts (Archivo, Asap, for example) their catalogue is quite larger and it’s totally worth to take a look.
Open Foundry
If you are into opensource creating, this is the place you need to go. This website (which, by the way, is gorgeous) presents a collection of open source fonts (which can be downloaded used and edited). As an extra feature, the font display and digital specimens really rock. You can chose to preview the fonts in lower or uppercase as well as other nice set of customized features.
Font Squirrel
If font choosing is not your strongest skill, the good n’ ol’ Font Squirrel is the place to you. They only have high quality fonts there so, if you are not into checking font quality, these guys do it for you. Their catalogue is carefully chosen so you can be sure that the font you are downloading is complete and well drawn.
BN Nicks
Looking for cool, contemporary display fonts? Then Brandon Nickerson’s web and portfolio might be just the right place to start your quest. Although his older fonts are for sale (at a really convenient prices) he always launches his new designs for free (for a limited time). Following him on social media can also be a good idea, to keep up with his prolific work.
Hanken Design Co.
Although most of their fonts have a price, they offer a nice catalogue of text and display fonts (some of which are quite experimental). If you are looking for something different that might be outside of the regular, trendy aesthethic, this might be a good website to check out.
