Hilary Campbell is a New York based freelance illustrator and cartoon lover who has published several popular books like ‘Feminist Fight Club’ and award winning short films across the country. Her cartoons are simple, charming, and relatable with witty humor about peoples’ daily lives and pop culture.
Hilary’s passion for art and film started since she was a kid and she continues to push boundaries even today by making cartoons for the New Yorker and as a reflection of herself. Just because you are a freelancer doesn’t mean you can’t poke a little fun at being a freelancer sometimes. 😜

Introduction 👋
My name is Hilary Campbell. I'm a cartoonist, Illustrator, comedian as well, you know, I bring humor to art basically, right? And I've been doing it I think, like seven years now, which is wild. I mean, I've been drawing since I was a kid. It's what I like to do, it's what I was good at a young age.
Passion for Art
I went to film school for college and was always drawing through that, but at the time, was more interested in like, screenwriting and all that jazz. Then after college, I worked in film festivals, I worked in documentary films, I worked on a Lifetime movie, that was interesting (you know, and weird…)
The Career Struggle (￢_￢;)
And then, in the middle of that, I started to just realize that I wanted to be drawing more, as for like, my voice, and thinking like “I think this is a career..?” or you know, like not realizing fully at the beginning you go, “I think this could be a career. I'm not sure how yet”. It took years to really figure out how to make an income doing this.
But after working in film festivals, I made a leap to where I went back to like waitressing and nannying and then drawing on the side for a few years ,until I got started to build enough like gigs, clients, and everything. And before I got into the New Yorker, as a cartoonist, and ever since then it's just been cartooning, illustrating books. I do stand up, I just had my first book come out, and now I’m maybe starting to work in TV, so we'll see.
Freelancer Journey 🌄
We have to be okay with being uncomfortable with money. Like you know, like when you're a freelancer, and you're starting out and even when you're not starting out 😅, you have to be okay with kind of like, okay, “I don't know, this month”, but you’re like okay, with instability and knowing, like, if you invest in yourself. You know, typically for me, I've seen that it comes back to me, but I'll still have you have to be okay with sitting in the like, “I'm not sure this month,” you know, “I don't know if I'm gonna get a job this month, but I know, a job will be coming in the future.”
I mean, I've just had a great experience working with Yelle and then I’ve met her before she and Andrea started InCreative Co. And it was a really cool experience to like, get hired on a job, but then have this interim person of like, “I don't have to talk to the client”, I just get to talk to Yelle and be really honest with her and talk about the job and be like, you know, be kind of blunt, and then she could translate to the client. And then that's kind of how she's built the company though, too. And I think for me, it's a beautiful way to work and I think it makes everyone else happier.
